Finds the gap between two times. If the end time is earlier than the start, it is taken as the next day, so overnight spans work too.
This tool finds how many hours and minutes separate two times: the length of a task, a night's sleep, a journey.
Here is the start time converted to minutes, the end time converted to minutes and the difference. Converting to minutes first is the point of the method, since subtracting hours and minutes separately invites a mistake in the borrow.
When the end time comes out lower than the start time, the span is taken to cross midnight and 1440 minutes, a full day, are added. Night shifts can therefore be entered exactly as they stand.
From 22:30 to 07:15 the next morning is 8 hours 45 minutes, or 525 minutes, or 8.75 hours as a decimal.
07:15 is 435 minutes and 22:30 is 1350. Since 435 is the smaller, a day is added to give 1875, and 1875 − 1350 = 525 minutes.
Payroll usually wants hours as a decimal. Forty-five minutes is 0.75 hours, not 0.45: the minutes are being converted from sixtieths to hundredths, and writing them straight after the decimal point is a common and expensive error.
A difference of more than 24 hours cannot be found this way. The hour must lie between 0 and 23 and the minutes between 0 and 59.
