Torque Unit Conversion

Converts torque between N·m, kgf·m, lbf·ft and more. One kgf·m is 9.80665 N·m. Tightening torques are usually quoted in N·m in Japan and in lbf·ft in the United States, so conversion comes up often.

This converts torque between N·m, N·cm, kgf·m, kgf·cm, lbf·ft and lbf·in.

The kgf is the force gravity exerts on one kilogram, fixed by the standard acceleration of 9.80665 m/s².

Example

Ten newton metres is 1.02 kgf·m, 7.38 lbf·ft or 88.5 lbf·in. A bicycle pedal takes around 35 N·m and a car wheel nut around 100 N·m, which gives a feel for the range.

The order of the units means nothing

N·m is a force times a distance, and reversing them changes nothing. Work comes out in the same units, though, so by convention torque is written in N·m and energy in joules. The numbers match, but one is a force applied around a turn and the other along a movement.

Notes

American manuals often write lbf·ft as ft·lb; they are the same. Do not confuse it with lbf·in, which is a twelfth of the size.

Use the tightening torque specified for the fastener. Too much stretches the thread and too little lets it work loose.
