Make Waves on Water

Press the water surface and waves spread out from that spot. Drag to turn the view and use the wheel to move closer and further away. A source can be a single wave packet or a continuous wave, and arranging continuous waves in a set shape raises interference fringes.

How fast a wave travels comes from its wavelength, the water depth, and the surface tension. Short waves are held up by surface tension and long waves by gravity, and at the boundary between them each wavelength travels at its own speed, so the shape falls apart. In the speed model every wave travels at the same speed whatever its wavelength.

Double-click the title in a panel header to switch how the panels are laid out. In the movable layout you drag panels wherever you like and keep as many open as you want; in the fixed layout a single chosen panel sits in the top right.
