The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) is a natural history museum on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City. It stands in Theodore Roosevelt Park, across the street from Central Park, and its 21 interconnected buildings house 45 permanent exhibition halls, a planetarium and a library.
Its collections contain about 32 million specimens of plants, animals, fungi, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, human remains and cultural artifacts, only a small fraction of which can be displayed at any time. The museum opened in 1871 and sponsors more than 120 special field expeditions each year.
