Times Square is one of the world’s busiest pedestrian intersections, tourist destinations and entertainment hubs, formed by the junction of Broadway, Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Together with the adjacent Duffy Square, it is a bowtie-shaped plaza five blocks long between 42nd and 47th Streets. As the hub of the Theater District, it is constantly lit by digital billboards and advertisements.
Formerly known as Longacre Square, it was renamed in 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to the newly built Times Building. It is the site of the New Year’s Eve ball drop, held every year since December 31, 1907, and draws an estimated 50 million visitors a year. It is sometimes called "the Crossroads of the World".
