Gulf of Porto

A Mediterranean gulf on the west coast of Corsica, in Corse-du-Sud. Known for its rugged cliffs, it was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1983 together with the Calanche of Piana, the Gulf of Girolata and the Scandola Reserve.

The Gulf of Porto opens onto the Mediterranean on the western side of Corsica, between Calvi and Ajaccio. It is famous for its rugged cliffs and the vivid colours of its rock, and its shores are part of the Regional Natural Park of Corsica.

On the southern shore, the Calanche of Piana form a maze of strangely shaped red rocks, while the Scandola peninsula to the north is a nature reserve. Covered in maquis shrubland and rich in birds and marine life, the area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
