Verdon Gorge
A river canyon in Provence, between the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Var departments. Cut by the Verdon River through limestone, it is about 25 km long and up to 700 m deep.
The Verdon Gorge is a river canyon in Provence in southeastern France. Between the towns of Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, the Verdon River has worn a valley about 25 km (15.5 mi) long and up to 700 metres deep into the limestone. The river is named for its turquoise-green water, and at the end of the gorge it flows into the artificial Lake of Sainte-Croix.
Roads along the rim offer a series of viewpoints, and visitors also explore the gorge by kayak or on foot. Its limestone walls, several hundred metres high, are an outstanding destination for multi-pitch climbing, with around 1,500 routes. The area lies within the Verdon Regional Natural Park.
