Millau Viaduct
A cable-stayed motorway bridge across the Tarn valley near Millau, Aveyron. About 2.5 km long, with a structural height of 343 m, it opened in December 2004.
The Millau Viaduct carries the A75 motorway across the gorge of the Tarn just west of Millau, in the Aveyron department of southern France. Spanning a gap of about 2,460 metres, it links two limestone plateaus, the Causse Rouge and the Causse du Larzac, on the route from Paris to Béziers and Montpellier.
The bridge was designed by the French engineer Michel Virlogeux with the British architect Norman Foster. It was built in about three years, inaugurated on 14 December 2004 and opened to traffic two days later. With a structural height of 343 metres, it was the tallest bridge in the world for more than twenty years, until late 2025.
