There was / There were（過去形）｜中学英語

There is / There are の過去形は There was / There were です。「〜がありました」「〜がいました」と過去のことを表すときに使います。

基本の形

be 動詞を過去形にするだけで、過去の文が作れます。

現在形	過去形
There is	There was
There are	There were

単数なら was、複数なら were を使います。

There was a cat under the table.

テーブルの下に猫がいました。

There were many people in the park.

公園にたくさんの人がいました。

was / were の後に not をつけます。短縮形は wasn’t / weren’t です。

There wasn't a cloud in the sky.

空に雲ひとつありませんでした。

There weren't any students in the classroom.

教室には生徒が一人もいませんでした。

any は否定文でよく使われます。「一つも〜ない」というニュアンスが出ます。

Was / Were を文頭に出します。

Was there a bookstore near here?

この近くに本屋がありましたか？

Were there any problems?

何か問題がありましたか？

Yes の場合

Yes, there was. / Yes, there were.

No の場合

No, there wasn’t. / No, there weren’t.

Were there many people at the party?

パーティーにはたくさん人がいましたか？

Yes, there were.

はい、いました。

There was a beautiful rainbow yesterday.

昨日きれいな虹がありました。

There were three apples on the table.

テーブルの上にりんごが3つありました。

There wasn't enough time.

十分な時間がありませんでした。

Were there any messages for me?

私に何かメッセージはありましたか？

後ろに来る名詞が単数か複数かで決まります。

名詞	使う形

There was only one answer.

答えは1つだけでした。

There were two cats in the garden.

庭に猫が2匹いました。

現在形と同じルールなので、単数・複数に気をつけて使い分けましょう。
