不定詞の否定形 not to do｜中学英語

to 不定詞を否定形にするときは、to の直前に not を置きます。「〜しないこと」「〜しないように」という意味になります。

名詞的用法の否定

「〜しないこと」という意味で、文の主語や目的語になります。

Not to study is a bad habit.

彼は私の言うことが聞こえないふりをした。

decide, promise, pretend などの動詞のあとに not to do がよく使われます。

副詞的用法の否定

「〜しないように」という目的を表すことができます。

I spoke quietly not to wake the baby.

赤ちゃんを起こさないように静かに話した。

She hid the present not to be found.

見つからないように彼女はプレゼントを隠した。

ただし、目的の否定をはっきり示したいときは in order not to や so as not to を使うほうが明確です。

I left early in order not to be late.

遅刻しないために早く出発した。

She studied hard so as not to fail the exam.

tell / ask / want + 人 + not to do

「（人）に〜しないように言う／頼む／望む」という表現でも not to do を使います。

My mother told me not to stay up late.

母は私に夜更かししないように言った。

The teacher asked us not to run in the hallway.

先生は私たちに廊下を走らないように頼んだ。

I want you not to forget this.

私はあなたにこのことを忘れないでほしい。

人と not to do の語順に注意しましょう。「人 + not to do」という順番です。

never to do

not の代わりに never を使うと、「決して〜しない」という強い否定になります。

I promised never to do it again.

二度とそれをしないと約束した。

She decided never to speak to him again.

彼女は二度と彼と話さないことに決めた。

never も to の前に置きます。
