「そういうものだ」「仕方ない」の英語表現

That’s the way it goes

「そういうものだ」「仕方ない」とあきらめた気持ちを表すときに使う。That’s the way the ball bounces. ともいう。bounce はボールなどが「はねる」という意味で、文字どおりに訳すと「ボールがはねるやり方である」となる。

A: I got fired because of one mistake.
B: That’s the way it goes.

You never know your luck

「あなたは運をわかっていない」から「運とはそういうものだ」という意味になった表現。「あきらめないで」というニュアンスをもつこともある。

A: I failed the entrance exam.
B: You never know your luck.
